Cadmium Pigments are among the most valuable and most frequently used high-quality artist colors.
1817 Friedrich Stromeyer and Carl Samuel Hermann independently discovered cadmium in contaminated zinc carbonate. Oil colors have been produced in the form of yellow pigments for the first time in 1819, which should replace the toxic Chrom (Lead) Yellow.
Because of the low availability of cadmium, the production could not be started until 1840.
Cadmium derives its name from the Latin word cadmi, which means means zinc ore, and the Greek word Kadmeia, or the earth of Kadmeia. Kadmeia was the former Thebes, which was allegedly founded by the legend of the Phoenician prince Cadmus.
